On Wednesday the 11th of January the John Scottus Girls Ultimate Frisbee team traveled down to Cork to compete in University College Cork’s Murray Cup. It was an early start for the girls who left Donnybrook at 7:40. The girls were scheduled to play three twenty minute games in their group with the top two teams advancing to the semi finals.
Our first game was against Regina Mundi College 1, eventual semi finalists and a school that was expected to perform well were outplayed throughout the 20 minutes as the JSS girls ran out 11 – 3 winners. The girls then had a twenty minute break before they would be required to play their final two group games back to back to determine if they would make the semi finals. First up was ST. Marys 2 and after a tense start the girls soon found their rhythm picking up where they left off in the previous game putting in a dominant performance and winning 10 – 2. The third and final game proved much like the previous two, the girls strong defense proving too much, as the St. Angelas girls never got a moments rest when in possession. The game finished 12 – 1 and meant that not only did the girls reach their semi final spot, but did so comfortably in top spot of the group.
While the semi final brought an increase in opposition standard it didn’t bring a change in result. The girls fitness and work rate in defense again being the noticeable difference between the teams as an 8 – 2 win meant a final against Muckross College Park was on the cards.
In truth from early in the day this was a likely final. If the JSS girls had looked impressive in their wins so far then Muckross certainly did likewise. Having only conceded 3 scores in the 4 games they had played and scoring almost 50 they came into the final against JSS very high on confidence.
Unfortunately the JSS girls finished on the wrong side of a 8 – 5 scoreline in a very exciting final. The girls had to be content with silver medals but again put in an excellent performance and for the fifth game in a row put immense pressure on the opposition when defending.
After an extremely enjoyable and successful day down in Cork the girls will continue to train hard along with the boys on Tuesdays after School with sights now being set on the All Ireland’s later in the year.
