Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations and activities began in earnest in the week beginning Monday 12th March and has continued on after St. Patrick’s weekend due to snow! We finished the occasion with our traditional céilí on Friday 23rd March. The students were tutored by the highly-experienced Ms. Telford, who directed the céilí ‘as Gaeilge’! There were other activities during Seachtain na Gaeilge, including in-class quizes, an indoor tóraíocht taisce (treasure hunt) where students had to answer 50 questions ‘as Gaeilge’. The results if this activity will be anounced when we return to school after the Easter Break.
An interesting project was begun by 2nd and TY students which coincided with National Tree Week. Both groups have undertaken to complete a survey of the native trees of Ireland (again, in Irish) and this should be concluded early in the Summer Term. There are many fascinating facts about trees, from historical, spiritual and mystical perspectives and students will learn about placenames and other interesting aspects in their naticve tongue! This activity is also helping our school to win a Green Flag!
Finally there was a poster competition for students of 1st and 2nd years. Each poster is based on a seanfhocal, or Irish saying, and the prizes awarded will be for students’ ability to interpret the true meaning of each seanfhocal.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir as bhur gcomhluadar ar an ocáid speisialta seo!
