EmotionalThe emotional development of the student in John Scottus is monitored and cared for by the Class Teacher, who is a long term mentor for the student, sees the student a number of times each day and takes care of day to day issues. The small class sizes facilitate this level of interaction, which is important for healthy emotional development. Besides this, music, art, drama and cultural visits are aspects of emotional development to which John Scottus gives special attention. Boys and Girls: John Scottus is not a co-educational school. Because of their different speeds of learning and their different requirements in their relationship with the Class Teacher, experience has shown that the needs of boys and girls are best met separately. While the boys and girls are together for a range of activities, boys and girls, where numbers permit, are in separate classrooms for their academic work. Boys and girls are encouraged to regard each other as brother and sister. Music: Everyone can sing. All pupils participate in singing at assembly as well as in weekly singing classes. There is a school choir and many of our pupils sing in prominent Dublin choirs. Speech and Drama: Children need drama. There are speech and drama events a number of times each year. Emphasis is on developing their speech so that it is clear, audible and articulate. Small productions are presented once or twice a year. Art: Art is a great outlet for creativity and expression of beauty, a necessary part of every child’s education. Children are taught to develop the traditional skills of drawing and painting from life. Modelling, craft work, print, fabric and fibre work are also given scope and expression. Classes also visit art galleries and students are encouraged to view and appreciate each other’s work. Class Holidays: The School believes that it is good for each Class, from the age of eight upwards, to go away together for a number of days in the course of the year. This strengthens friendships amongst the children themselves and matures the relationship with the Class Teacher. For the younger Classes, the holidays are based in different locations around Ireland. |
